Tips to Prevent Holiday Weight Gain

Dieting and winter holidays don't generally mix very well, but there are ways to ensure that your silhouette will not get harmed too bad in the process of celebrating. Adopt a few easy, helpful tips to ensure you have fun without depriving yourself or feeling guilty afterwards.

No matter how much we try to avoid stating it, holiday meals are a central part of the celebration process and even large amounts of willpower cannot completely save one from completely avoiding going overboard in terms of calorie intake. All is not lost however, as there are still a variety of tricks that can be used to ensure that only minimal damage will be done. Here are a few things to consider:

Eat regularly
Avoid the temptation to save yourself from eating too much by starving before a large meal. Doing so will only weaken your will to practice portion control and will cause you to miss the satiety signals your body will be sending you.

Wear tight fitting clothes
Aside from being flattering, such pieces also act as a gentle reminder for potion control, helping you stay on track and look spectacular while doing so. A great conversation starter, a fabulous outfit will remind you of your motivation in the process.

Skip non-essentials
The large amount of irresistible hors d'oeuvres and calorie-filled main courses will invariably take a toll on your willpower if you don't set a few rules beforehand. One such helpful rule is making sure that you only taste foods that you like and that you can't have every day. This way the sense of indulgence will be preserved while the calorie range will be kept under control.

Avoid tasting everything you prepare
A bite here, a morsel there might not seem like much but the truth is that a single tablespoon can mean 100 extra calories and they can add up surprisingly fast. If possible, let your family members be the judges and leave it up to them to decide what ingredients need to be added or whether it is cooked enough.

Use cooking substitutes
There are a myraid of possible substitutes for part of the ingredients of your favorite traditional recipes. Now is the perfect time to use them as the combined effect of a few easy substitutions can have an absolutely staggering calorie-reducing effect. Butter can be easily replaced with unsweetened applesauce, for example and there are many other similar replacements.

Breastfeeding May Help Prevent ADHD In Children

Breastfeeding may help prevent children from developing ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) later in life, according to a new study.

The research was conducted by a team of Israeli researchers and published in Breastfeeding Medicine, the official journal of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine.

The scientists, led by Aviva Mimouni-Bloch, MD, of the Tel-Aviv University (TAU) Sackler Faculty of Medicine, wanted to determine whether the development of ADHD might be linked to a shorter duration of breastfeeding.

They compared breastfeeding history and other factors in children between the ages of 6 and 12 who were diagnosed with ADHD at Schneider's Children Medical Center in Israel with data from two control groups of kids of the same age without the disorder.

One of the control groups consisted of healthy children whose brother or sister had ADHD - this group was considered as having a similar genetic background and environment as the research group.

The other group was made up of kids who were consulted at the clinic and were not suspected of having the neurological disorder.

The mothers were asked to complete a questionnaire which sought information about their educational, psychosocial, medical status, pregnancy and perinatal details.

The researchers looked at whether the mother breastfed exclusively, whether she breastfed and gave formula, or whether she only gave formula when the child was 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year old.

Kids who had ADHD were less likely to have been breastfed at 3 and 6 months of age than the children without the disorder, according to the results.

Only 43% of ADHD kids were breastfed at three months of age and just 29% were breastfed when they were 6 months old, the researchers explained.

Results showed that 69% of the siblings group and 73% of the other control group were breastfed when they were 3 months old, and at six months of age, 50% of the siblings group and 57% of the other group were breastfed.

Ruth Lawrence, MD, Editor-in-Chief of Breastfeeding Medicine and Professor of Pediatrics, University of Rochester School of Medicine, said:

"Breastfeeding has been shown to have a positive impact on child development, good health, and protection against illness. Now, another possible benefit of breastfeeding for three months and especially six months or longer has been identified. This study opens another avenue of investigation in the prevention of ADHD."

The authors concluded:

"Whether the lesser exposure to breastfeeding in ADHD children is causally associated with ADHD or, on the contrary, a consequence of early abnormalities of feeding behavior at the breast cannot be determined from the current study.

We speculate that prevention, at least partial, of ADHD may be added to the list of the multiple biological advantages of human milk feeding."

A previous study found that ADHD often continues into adulthood, and kids with the disorder are also more likely to have other psychiatric conditions later in life.

A simple review of the USDA Nutrient Database to compare breast milk to alternate sources shows breasst milk to be the best with cow's milk 2nd best. When comparing the breast milk to healthy brain tissue one finds that several amino acids, tryptophan, lysine, methionine, cystine, tyrosine, and serine are likely to be low as well as the vitamin choline, and others. There will be an overall much better balance of all needed nutrients if solid foods are begun at three to four months of age with one or two egg yolks. This was the recommended practice for more than 35 years from 1946 throug 1974 or later---before problems of autism and ADHD became so common. (see Dr. Bennjamin Spock, "Baby and Child Care.") This data comparison confirms the need to supplement breast feeding and especially alternate milk sources for proper brain development.

Women Eating More Protein Report Weight Loss Success

Atkins Diet, Zone Diet, South Beach Diet, etc., etc., etc. Chances are you have known someone who has tried a high protein diet. In fact, according to the International Food Information Council Foundation, 50% of consumers were interested in including more protein in their diets and 37% believed protein helps with weight loss. In a new study released in the May/June 2013 issue of the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior, researchers found a relatively high proportion of women who reported using the practice of ''eating more protein'' to prevent weight gain which was associated with reported weight loss.

Among a national sample, researchers from the University of Minnesota surveyed 1,824 midlife women (40-60 years old) to (1) describe perceptions about protein sources and requirements, (2) identify the reported frequency of using the ''eating more protein'' practice to prevent weight gain, and (3) compare reported protein intake to reported frequency of using the ''eating more protein'' practice to prevent weight gain.

Most women correctly identified good protein sources, and the majority could indicate the daily percent of dietary energy recommended from protein. ''Eating more protein'' to prevent weight gain was reported by 43% of women (and more than half of obese women) as a practice to prevent weight gain. Reported use of this practice was related to self-reported weight loss over two years. Two factors associated with effective use of this practice included the level of protein intake and self-efficacy toward weight management.

According to Noel Aldrich, lead author, those participants' who had reported weight loss with "eating more protein" had a protein intake that was consistent with the focus on protein suggested by the 2010 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. He said, "Education regarding dietary protein requirements may enhance the use of this practice. Women may need more information regarding protein energy content and effective selection of protein sources to enhance protein intake as a weight management strategy. Given that the majority of Americans are overweight, identifying the most effective practices and related factors surrounding successful weight loss and prevention of weight gain are important."

Drinking coffee could decrease the risk of breast cancer recurring in patients taking the widely used drug Tamoxifen, a study at Lund University in Sweden has found. Patients who took the pill, along with two or more cups of coffee daily, reported less than half the rate of cancer recurrence, compared with their non-coffee drinking, Tamoxifen-taking counterparts.

The team followed over 600 breast cancer patients from southern Sweden for an average of five years. Approximately 300 took Tamoxifen. The drug, a common hormone therapy after breast cancer surgery, reduces the risk of new tumours by blocking oestrogen receptors. How coffee interacts with the treatment, however, isn't immediately known.

"One theory we are working with is that coffee 'activates' Tamoxifen and makes it more efficient", says Maria Simonsson, doctoral student in Oncology at Lund University.

The Lund University researchers have previously linked coffee consumption to a decreased risk of developing certain types of breast cancer. Caffeine has also been shown to hamper the growth of cancer cells. The latest observational study involving coffee's role in cancer prevention and treatment underlines the need for more research, according to the team.

"We would like to know more about how lifestyle can interact with breast cancer treatment", says Helena Jernstrom, Associate Professor of Experimental Oncology at Lund University.
